Summer in John: Faith and Surrender

Summer in John Day 12

"Simon Peter answered him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.'" - John 6:68

👉🏻 In John 6:36-71, we continue to witness Jesus' teaching on being the Bread of Life. This passage reveals the reactions of the crowd to His message and the profound response of the disciples. It presents a crucial lesson about the significance of faith, surrender, and choosing Jesus as the source of eternal life. Let us delve into these verses and draw valuable insights for our own walk of faith

🟠 Hard Sayings:

As Jesus explains His role as the Bread of Life, the crowd becomes increasingly skeptical. They struggle to grasp the depths of His teaching and find it difficult to accept. Jesus challenges them to move beyond their limited understanding and embrace the spiritual truth He offers. We, too, may encounter challenging aspects of the Christian faith. In those moments, it is crucial to lean on the Holy Spirit, seek understanding through prayer and study, and trust in God's wisdom and sovereignty.

🟠 The Choice to Believe:

Jesus acknowledges that not everyone will accept His teachings and believe in Him. He recognizes that some will turn away. However, there is a beautiful response from Peter that encapsulates the heart of true faith. Peter declares, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." Peter recognizes that Jesus is the only source of truth, eternal life, and salvation. This response highlights the importance of making a conscious choice to believe in Jesus and commit our lives to Him, even when faced with doubts or difficulties.

🟠 The Cost and Reward of Discipleship:

Jesus challenges His disciples with the concept of eating His flesh and drinking His blood. This teaching causes some disciples to stumble and abandon Him. Jesus reminds them that following Him requires wholehearted devotion and surrender. He does not promise an easy path, but He offers the reward of eternal life and intimacy with God. Discipleship entails a willingness to give up our own desires, take up our cross daily, and follow Jesus wherever He leads.

John 6:36-71 presents us with the challenge and beauty of choosing to follow Jesus as the Bread of Life. As we encounter the hard sayings of the Gospel, we must wrestle with our doubts and choose to trust in Jesus' words of eternal life. Like Peter, we can declare that there is nowhere else to turn because only Jesus has the answers we seek. Embracing Jesus as our Savior and Lord requires faith, surrender, and a willingness to count the cost of discipleship. Yet, in that choice, we find the immeasurable reward of eternal life and a deep, intimate relationship with God.

May we, like Peter, wholeheartedly embrace Jesus as the source of truth and eternal life. Let us trust in His teachings, even when they challenge us, and surrender our lives to Him. As we follow Him with faith and devotion, may we experience the abundant life and the intimate fellowship that He promises.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the teachings of Jesus, the Bread of Life. Help us to trust in His words and embrace Him as the source of truth and eternal life. Strengthen our faith and grant us the grace to surrender our lives fully to Him. When doubts arise or challenges come our way, remind us that there is nowhere else to turn, for Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. May we follow Him with wholehearted devotion, counting the cost of discipleship, and finding the immeasurable reward of intimacy with You.
